Vanessa Ellis works for theatre, film and television as a performer, puppeteer, choreographer and puppet-maker. With an interest in visual theatre and storytelling, Vanessa segued from dance to puppetry in 1998 and has been devising, constructing and performing puppetry for the last 17 years. Her independent work is a mix of dance, puppetry and visual-based storytelling.
Vanessa spent two years touring through Europe, Asia, New Zealand and Australia as an animatronics puppeteer on the multi-award-winning arena production, Walking with Dinosaurs.
Vanessa has been fortunate to work with many companies and directors in Australia who incorporate puppetry. This relationship has taken her throughout the world and to many festivals and events. The companies with which she has worked include Global Creatures, Victorian Opera, Opera Australia, the Creature Technology Company, Windmill Performing Arts, Patch Theatre Company, Terrapin, Polyglot, Black Hole, the Moomba Parade, Puppet Vision and the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games as assistant to the puppetry director. She has worked with directors such as Peter Wilson, Simon Phillips, Nancy Black, Jessica Wilson, Dave Brown and Scott Faris.
In 2006 Vanessa participated in a nine-week master class with Philippe Genty and Mary Underwood, which culminated into a public season.
