Nancy Black


Nancy Black is well known in Melbourne as  writer, director, producer and teacher. She has worked widely in mainstream and independent theatre, taught at the Victorian College of the Arts Drama School, made several short films and appeared in numerous television shows. Since 2001 she has been the Artistic Director of Black Hole Theatre, an independent experimental theatre company with a puppetry base. For Black Hole she has devised and directed award-winning shows, toured internationally, initiated a wide range of professional development programs, and created international partnerships.

Her recent work includes directing and co-devising BLIND with the Duda Paiva Company (the Netherlands). BLIND premiered in France in 2015 and is touring through Europe. It was presented in the 2016 FOLA season at Theatre Works, and will be part of the 2016 Wuzhen Theatre Festival in China. Outside Black Hole Theatre, Nancy directed the acclaimed double bill for the Victorian Opera (Manuel Faella’s Master Peter’s Puppet Show and Elliott Carter’s What Next?), and will direct Virgil Thompson’s 4 Saints in 3 Acts for them in 2016.
