After completing a Doctor of Musical Arts in the University of Iowa, Michael returned to Melbourne to commence teaching at Monash University and the University of Melbourne. He subsequently moved to Bendigo with his young family to head up the Woodwind Department at Girton Grammar School.
As an instrumentalist Michael has performed with Orchestra Victoria and the Melbourne Symphony and has also been an active chamber musician. His involvement with Elision and Libra Ensemble fostered his love of contemporary music that continues to this day, having premiered more than twenty new works. Michael's music making is made up of teaching, conducting, performing, research, recording and writing. He has conducted choirs, wind bands, orchestras and jazz groups from beginning musicians, to fine community ensembles such as Stonnington Symphony, to professional orchestras and chamber groups.
