Jonathan Heilbron

Double Bass

Jonathan Heilbron is an Australian double bass player, improviser and composer who works in areas as varied as contemporary classical, improvised, experimental and orchestral music. Jonathan has performed both as a soloist with ensembles in Australia, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Austria and Singapore. As an interpreter of contemporary music, he has performed with Klangforum Wien (Austria), Kammerensemble Neue Musik (Germany), Ensemble Soundinitiative (France) and Schallfeld (Austria).

He has commissioned and premiered new pieces for solo double bass by composers such as James Rushford, Alex Garsden, Alessandro Perini (Italy), David Young, Michaela Davies and Daniel Wilson (UK). He has presented music at the International Ferienkurs in Darmstadt, the Impuls festival in Graz, the Bendigo International Festival of Exploratory Music, MultiNo! in Oslo and the Multiversal Festival in Copenhagen.

He is a member of the Melbourne-based Quiver New Music Ensemble, the improvising trio Ellipsis and the experimental trio DRUM and is the founder of the Phonetic Orchestra, an ensemble comprising Melbourne’s most innovative emerging improvisers, composers and performers.
