Joan Wright


Joan Wright is Associate Principal Double Bass with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, a position she has held for the past 25 years. She is solo bassist with ELISION, first appearing with the ensemble in the 1993 Lim–Kosky opera, The Oresteia, and shortly afterwards in Richard Barrett’s Negatives cycle. Joan has toured with ELISION to Moscow, Paris, Berlin and London.

With ELISION, Joan gave the Australian premiere of Ferneyhough’s Trittico per G.S, as well as being involved in numerous ensemble pieces commissioned and written especially for the group. Joan has been closely involved in the development and performance of work by Liza Lim, Dominik Karski, Richard Barrett, Aaron Cassidy and new work coming from Timothy McCormack.

Joan has performed with a number of chamber ensembles, including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and at the Australian Chamber Music Festival, and has given solo recitals and taught at various double bass conferences and music camps in Australia and the United States.

She teaches privately and for the University of Western Australia. She has been quietly waiting for 21 years to perform with ELISION in Western Australia.
