Michael Hewes has vast experience in composing and implementing spatial and/or interactive sound works and environments in Australia and internationally for organisations that include: the Melbourne International Festival, Festival of Perth, Adelaide Festival, Sydney Festival, Ten Days on the Island, Brisbane Festival, Maerz Music (Berlin), Ny Musikk (Oslo), Next Wave Festival (Melbourne), Institute of Modern Art (Brisbane), Tolarno Galleries (Melbourne), Matsue Dance Theatre (Japan), Warsaw Autumn Contemporary Music Festival (Poland), the Performance Space (Sydney), Australian Centre for Modern Art (Melbourne), Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery (Launceston), Monash Science Centre (Melbourne), Wesley College (Melbourne), Astra Chamber Music Society, Aphids Events, Elision Ensemble, Wax Sound Media and Hutes Contemporary Music.
A graduate of the La Trobe University Department of Music, Michael has spent twenty years as an audio engineer/producer specialising in the recording and live production of contemporary music. During this time he has recorded and performed with many of the leading contemporary music organisations in Australia, including the Astra Chamber Music Society, Elision Ensemble, Ken Murray, Nick Tsiavos, Pipeline, Libra Ensemble, Michael Kieran Harvey, Chamber Made Opera, Contemporary Music Events, the David Chesworth Ensemble, Speak Percussion and Aphids Events.
Michael is a founding partner of Run Stop Sound, an artist-run recording and post-production studio in Melbourne, and teaches both Audio Production and Electronic Music Composition.
