From Queensland, Lloyd studied clarinet at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music under the tutelage of Paul Dean and Floyd Williams. In his time there, Lloyd was a soloist with the Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra and won the Conservatorium Postgraduate Award. After graduating with honours in 2011, Lloyd began studies at the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne under David Thomas. Throughout his time at the academy, Lloyd participated in the Professional Performance Program, completed an ANAM Fellowship as a member of the award-winning Arcadia Wind Quintet and was awarded the prestigious Director’s Prize.
In 2013 Lloyd travelled to Europe as Principal Clarinet of the Australian Youth Orchestra during their tour with Christoph Eschenbach and Joshua Bell, and in the same year was the recipient of the AYO Accenture Australia Scholarship. Lloyd has also had several casual and contractual engagements with many of Australia’s orchestras, including the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. As a soloist, Lloyd has performed the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with Orchestra Victoria as part of their Mostly Mozart series in the Melbourne Recital Centre.
Lloyd is also an avid supporter of both contemporary and Australian music, recently playing with the new music ensembles, eighth blackbird and Bang on a Can, as well as in an ever-growing number of collaborations with some of Australia’s finest composers. In 2015, Lloyd is looking forward to working with John Luther Adams in Banff, Canada, as part of the Banff Centre’s masterclass program. Lloyd will also be performing at the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival. When not playing the clarinet, Lloyd is also a ‘keen’ saxophonist.
