Jonathan Heilbron

Double bass

Jonathan Heilbron is an Australian double bass player, improviser and composer, who works in areas as varied as contemporary classical, improvised, experimental and orchestral music. He is a member of the Melbourne-based Quiver New Music Ensemble and is the founder of the Phonetic Orchestra, an ensemble made up of Melbourne's most exciting emerging improvisers, composers and performers.

Jonathan has performed with the Melbourne, Tasmanian and Queensland symphony orchestras, and has performed as a chamber musician with the Vienna International Soloist Ensemble and the Berlin-based ensemble, Konzert Minimal.

He has commissioned and premiered new pieces for solo double bass by composers such as James Rushford, Alex Garsden, Alessandro Perini (Italy), David Young, Michaela Davies and Daniel Wilson (UK). He has presented music at the Internationalen Ferienkurse in Darmstadt, and at the Impuls festival, Graz. 

As an improviser, Jonathan has appeared alongside leading figures in Australian and European experimental music, including Burkhard Beins (Germany), Jim Denley, Jon Rose and Peter Knight.
