Jacob Abela is a Melbourne-based pianist and composer born in NSW, and is currently a student at the Australian National Academy of Music, studying piano with Timothy Young. Jacob completed his Bachelor of Music (Performance) in 2012, studying piano with Stephanie McCallum at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Jacob has collaborated with internationally renowned musicians and ensembles such as the Bang on a Can All-Stars, members of eighth blackbird, Synergy Percussion, Brett Dean, Ensemble Offspring, Peter Hill and Elliott Gyger. As a soloist, Jacob has championed Messiaen’s Des Canyons aux Étoiles … with the ANAM orchestra, and performed other concertante works by Cage, Messiaen, Bartók, and Hindemith.
As a fierce exponent of contemporary music, Jacob has been engaged by international festivals in China, Singapore, Canada, and the US for his interpretations of today’s music. At home, his festival credits include the Metropolis (2014–15), Sydney (2012), and Verge (2011) festivals. Jacob is currently balancing his work as a performer with a passion for composition, with the prospect of premiering a chamber opera in 2016.
