Eclectic composer–pianist Erik Griswold fuses experimental, jazz and world music to create works of striking originality. Specialising in prepared piano, percussion and toy instruments, he has created a musical universe of his own that is ‘sincere’ (neural.it), ‘playful’ (igloo magazine), ‘colourful and refreshingly unpretentious’ (Paris Transatlantic).
Since the late 1980s Griswold has composed new works for many adventurous performers in the US and Australia, which have been performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House and Cafe Oto (London). He us a recipient of the prestigious Australia Council Fellowship in Music and his works can be heard on Mode Records, Room40, Move, Clocked Out and Innova.
Together with Vanessa Tomlinson, Griswold performs in Clocked Out, an ensemble that creates original music for prepared piano, percussion, found objects and toys. Clocked Out also produces innovative concert series, events and tours, for which they have received the APRA-AMCOS Award for Excellence by an Organisation (2011) and two Green Room Awards (2000).
Griswold has lived in San Diego, Los Angeles, New York, Melbourne, Adelaide and now calls Brisbane home. He is currently Adjunct Professor in Composition at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University, and holds a PhD from the University of California, San Diego.
