Contemporary violinist, string educator, and part-time mandolinist Zachary Johnston is a principal member of several contemporary music ensembles including 6° ensemble, Arcko Symphonic Project and 3 Shades Black, and was a founding member of the string quartet, Atticus.
With his background in contemporary music he is a strong advocate for keeping exploratory music in musicians’ vocabulary, young and old, new and experienced. Zac has taken this philosophy into his work with various ensembles including the State Music Camp, MSO Pizzicato Effect and a variety of improvisation workshops and school ensembles.
A strong supporter of new and established ‘grassroots’ artists, Zac has recorded for local musicians (including Georgia Fields and Jane Dust) and has been involved with bands including HMAS Vendetta (operatic ANZAC metal) and the Hobart Irish pub band, The Borstal Boys.
Zac is a member of the Melbourne Scottish Fiddle Club and has been a long-time contributor to the Irish Association of Tasmania’s Fleadh Ceol.
Zac performed with Argonaut for BIFEM 2013 and was involved with 6° ensemble for the 2014 Metropolis Series. He will be completing a Masters of Performance Teaching this year and be attending the New Music Summer School at the Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt in August.
