Bass Clarinet

Richard Haynes

Born in Brisbane, Richard Haynes studied clarinet in his home city and in Berne, Switzerland. Richard received major awards, including being named ABC Young Performer of the Year and being given an APRA Art Music Award for Best Performance of Australian Composition. In Switzerland he was awarded the Tschumi Musikpreis and first prize in the Concours Nicati.

Richard has performed as a soloist with the Melbourne, Tasmanian and Queensland symphony orchestras as well as with members of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in the contemporary works Échange by Xenakis, Kya by Scelsi, Roar by Smetanin and Time and the Bell by Rankine in addition to standard concerti by Mozart and Copland.

Richard now performs frequently in Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Switzerland and Austria with ELISION, Ensemble Garage, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble musikFabrik, Ensemble Praesenz, ensemble proton bern, Klangforum Wien, mam.manufaktur aktueller musik and Stroma. He has performed as guest principal clarinet and guest principal bass clarinet with the German symphony orchestras of the SWR and WDR. To date he has recorded works by Ros Bandt, Aaron Cassidy, Chris Dench, Brian Ferneyhough, Andrew Ford, Sam Hayden, Evan Johnson, Liza Lim, Timothy McCormack and Karlheinz Stockhausen for ABC Classics, Hearing Places, Huddersfield Contemporary Records, Kairos, Neos Music, NMC Records, Stockhausen Verlag and Wergo.
